Public Interest and its Vagueness
There’s no instruction manuscript for working in the public interest. Its concept too vague and easy to hide behind but it is a fundamental part of the law of modern democracies. But the public interest should mean more than legal passivity; acceptance of what happens, without active response or resistance. It is as much about method and formula as it is product. It’s also about governance and morals. It should be conforming to applicable law and carrying out functions properly and impartially. It must be acting sensibly and guaranteeing accountability and transparency. It must expose unethical conduct and properly manage private interests conflicting with official duties.
